Relatório sobre a qualidade da água em praias catarinenses, divulgado pela Fundação do Meio Ambiente (Fatma) na sexta-feira, aponta 57 pontos estão impróprios para banho no Estado. O oitavo levantamento da temporada de verão 2010 realizado pelo órgão foi feito em 194 locais. Em Florianópolis, 19 de 64 pontos analisados — ou seja, 29,69% — não foram recomendados.
O monitoramento abrange 107 balneários de 27 municípios. É possível fazer o estudo de mais de um ponto de cada praia. São analisados apenas trechos com risco de contaminação, como espaços com grande concentração populacional grande ou com valas, rios ou riachos aportando à praia.
A pesquisa de balneabilidade é realizada pela Fatma desde 1976. É feita com a coleta de amostras da água do mar em diversos pontos dos 500 quilômetros da costa catarinense.
Uma praia (ou curso d'água ou lagoa) é considerado impróprio para banho quando a quantidade da bactéria Escherichia coli por 100 mililitros for superior a 800 em mais de 20% das amostras coletadas nas últimas cinco semanas. O local também é classificado como impróprio quando forem encontradas mais de 2000 Escherichia coli por 100 mililitros. A bactéria vive no intestino de animais de sangue quente — do ser humano, inclusive — e é um indicativo de contaminação de água. A Escherichia coli pode provocar desde disenteria até infecções mais severas.
